สวีเดนเป็นประเทศที่มีการพัฒนาด้านอุตสาหกรรมสูงมาก เกษตรกรรมที่ในเคยเป็นเศรษฐกิจหลักของประเทศมีการจ้างงานน้อยกว่าร้อยละสองของแรงงานทั้งหมดในปัจจุบัน อุตสาหกรรมดั้งเดิมที่สำคัญของสวีเดนได้แก่ การป่าไม้ เหล็ก และไฟฟ้าพลังน้ำ แต่ในปัจจุบัน อุตสาหกรรมขั้นสูงเช่นรถยนต์ อากาศยาน อาวุธ และเวชภัณฑ์ เข้ามามีความสำคัญต่อเศรษฐกิจอย่างมาก การที่สวีเดนมีประชากรไม่สูงนัก ทำให้ตลาดภายในประเทศจำกัดและต้องพึ่งพาการส่งออก สวีเดนจึงเป็นแหล่งกำเนิดของบริษัทที่ประสบความสำเร็จในตลาดโลกจำนวนมาก เช่น วอลโว ซาบ อีริกส์สัน อีเล็กโทรลักซ์ เอชแอนด์เอ็ม เป็นต้น
สวีเดนได้รับอันดับสามจากการจัดอันดับความสามารถในการแข่งขันของเวิลด์อิโคโนมิกฟอรัมประจำปี 2006/07 สวีเดนมีการเก็บภาษีในอัตราที่สูง เช่นเดียวกับประเทศอื่นๆในภูมิภาค และมีสหภาพแรงงานที่แข็งแกร่ง ธนาคารแห่งชาติสวีเดน Sveriges Riksbank เป็นธนาคารกลางที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในโลก ก่อตั้งในปีพ.ศ. 2211 โดยปัจจุบัน ธนาคารให้ความสำคัญกับเสถียรภาพของราคา มีเป้าหมายเงินเฟ้อไม่เกินร้อยละ 2 ปัจจุบันสวีเดนยังคงใช้สกุลเงินโครนาสวีเดน โดยในปีพ.ศ. 2546 ได้มีการลงประชามติเกี่ยวกับการใช้ค่าเงินยูโร ซึ่งร้อยละ 56 ลงคะแนนเสียงไม่เห็นด้วย
Svenska är ett östnordiskt språk som talas av över tio miljoner människor i Finland och Sverige, i Finland framför allt i kustområdena och på Åland. Svenska är i stort sett ömsesidigt begripligt med danska och norska. De övriga nordiska språken, isländska och färöiska, är mindre ömsesidigt begripliga med svenska, norska och danska. Liksom de övriga nordiska språken härstammar svenskan från en gren av fornnordiska, den gemensamma språkstammen för de germanska folken i Skandinavien.
Rinkeby Swedish (after Rinkeby, a suburb of northern Stockholm with a large population of immigrants) is a common name among linguists for varieties of Swedish spoken by young people of foreign heritage in the suburbs of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. These varieties could alternatively be classified as sociolects, because the immigrant dialects share common traits independent of their geographical spread or the native country of the speakers. However, some studies have found distinctive features and led to terms such as Rosengård Swedish (after Rosengård in Malmö). A survey made by the Swedish linguist Ulla-Britt Kotsinas showed that foreign learners had difficulties in guessing the origins of Rinkeby Swedish speakers in Stockholm. The greatest difficulty proved to be identifying the speech of a boy whose parents were both Swedish; only 1.8% guessed his native language correctly.
Standard Swedish, used by most Swedish people, is the national language that evolved from the Central Swedish dialects in the 19th century and was well established by the beginning of the 20th century. While distinct regional varieties descended from the older rural dialects still exist, the spoken and written language is uniform and standardized. Some dialects differ considerably from the standard language in grammar and vocabulary and are not always mutually intelligible with Standard Swedish. These dialects are confined to rural areas and are spoken primarily by small numbers of people with low social mobility. Though not facing imminent extinction, such dialects have been in decline during the past century, despite the fact that they are well researched and their use is often encouraged by local authorities.
